6th Annual BC Energy Step Code Training Goes Hands-On

It's our sixth year of partnership with fortisBC - advanced training

IN-PERSON TRAINING SOLD OUT !

Calling Developers, Builders & Trades in Cranbrook & East Kootenay Region

FREE, hands-on training + accreditation is coming your way — and this year we went all-in on practical learning.

Presented by the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce in partnership with FortisBC.
Attendees will receive 8 CPD points upon completion of this in-person session.
This isn’t a sit-and-listen seminar. It’s a do-it-yourself, job-ready session built for the realities of building in the East Kootenays.

What to expect:

• Real Step 4 requirements — what they actually mean for our region
• How our climate affects insulation & airtightness decisions
• Side-by-side wall system comparisons using real mock-ups
• Hands-on time with membranes, tapes & insulation products
• Lessons learned from local Step 4 builds (what worked, what didn’t)
• Turning it all into a clear, practical action plan for your projects

This training is designed for builders, trades, designers, developers, and construction professionals who want practical takeaways they can use on site, not just slides on a screen.

FREE to attend, includes breakfast & lunch.
Space will be limited to keep the session interactive, so we recommend reserving your spot.

*NEW FOR 2026 - FOllow up Virtual Session

TUESDAY, APRIL 14, 6-9pm Mountain Time

This advanced follow-up session builds on the concepts introduced in the in-person Step 4 workshop and applies them to the unique challenges of retrofitting existing buildings for higher energy performance.

Examine how airtightness, insulation continuity, and moisture control strategies differ when working with existing assemblies. Using examples from local East Kootenay renovation projects and current BC retrofit incentive programs, the session explores practical pathways for achieving Step Code-equivalent performance in retrofit contexts. The webinar combines short presentations with case-study discussions, digital detail reviews, and participant Q&A.

• Identify the key differences between new-build Step 4 assemblies and retrofit envelope upgrades.

• Analyze how airtightness detailing must adapt to irregular existing conditions, penetrations, and sequencing constraints.

• Evaluate retrofit insulation strategies (interior, exterior, hybrid) for moisture safety and constructability in East Kootenay’s cold, dry climate.

• Reference effective R-values and heat-loss targets appropriate for retrofit performance goals.

• Recognize current programs, rebates, and testing requirements supporting high performance retrofits in B.C.

Schedule (3-Hour Webinar)

6:00 – 6:15 pm — Introduction & Recap: Link between new construction Step 4 principles and retrofit goals.

6:15 – 7:00 pm — Building Science for Retrofits: Moisture, airtightness, and thermal bridging challenges unique to existing walls.

7:15 – 8:15 pm — Retrofit Strategies & Case Studies: Compare interior/exterior insulation methods; review local examples and lessons learned.

8:15 – 8:50 pm — Detailing & Sequencing: Approaches for window transitions, air barrier continuity, and vapor control in retrofits.

8:50 – 9:00 pm — Wrap-Up: Key takeaways, next steps, and resources.
